The request to reallocate the $1.5 million intended for a park in the space toward a mixed-use development passed through the State Bonding Commission on June 30. "I think creating additional housing opportunities and filling in the ground floor with additional retail on what is a really strong retail corridor makes a lot of sense," Bronin said. "People need a place to live," Dickerson said.Īpartments, along with some retail space, rose to the top of the list of ideas for the parcel. "Complaints have increased in the surrounding area with business and homeowners complaining of individuals drinking, loitering and playing loud music in front of their establishments or blocking the public sidewalk," Boisvert said.Īdditionally, Boisvert said the area community service officers have increased enforcement in the area since the fence has gone up.Īfter determining a park wasn't the best idea for the space, Dickerson and other members of the revitalization zone, known as an NRZ, met with residents to determine what would solve a need in the community. ![]() However, it is unclear if this solved the issue or just relocated it.īoisvert said the police department has been able to issue trespassing tickets, but he said this "hasn't been an issue" since the fence went up. "It's the slowest we've had it," Dickerson said. Since then, things have changed for the better, at least at that street corner. ![]() The neighbors came together to form the Irving Street Committee, which successfully convinced the city to put a fence around the lot in early summer. "We did conduct a good amount of directed patrol and park and walks there." "North Street Crimes Unit also made a couple of gun arrests within the park," Boisvert said.
